PPPoE option Missing

Hello, I am new to OPNsense. I am in the process of switching over from a Sophos virtual firewall for home use. I have installed version 25.1 to a VM on my Proxmox host and been getting familiar with the UI. I went to go look at the WAN interface and look for the PPPoe setup but I am not seeing an option for this. I just have NONE, DHCP or Static (on IPv4). I have tried to delete and recreate the interface but not able to get that option to show up. I am sure I am missing something simple but if anyone has any ideas let me know. I do have 2 interfaces defined on the Proxmox side for the VM.

You have to create a PPPoE interface on vtnet1 first (Interfaces : Devices : Point-to-Point), then assign that to WAN.

Thank you, that is what I was missing. Appreciate it!

Hello,
I'm going to post my issue here since it looks very similar.
My ISP provided my these information:
- I need to use PPPoE with the Username/Password they provided me.
- I need to use a IPTV/VLAN, ID 40, Priority 0.

With that in mind, I plugged my ISP nokia device in the igc0 port of my computer and I tried multiple configurations but nothing seems to work.
Here is my last attempt:
- I created a VLAN like this:

- I assigned it to my default WAN but I cannot see PPPoE in my option for IPv4:

I don't really understand:
- Why don't I see the PPPoE option?
- Why even if I create a Point-to-Point PPPoE on my VLAN it does not work either..

Can anyone help?
Thanks.

Not without the exact instructions from your ISP. What is most probable is that your internet connection goes over PPPoE, so you have to create a PPPoE interface with the physical interface. The VLAN is often used besides the WAN connection and you can do that, too.

The providers often use an RFC1918 network for IPTV only. This will be a routed network.

What you end up with is a WAN PPPoE interface on igc0 and an IPTV interface on igc0_vlan40. That is, iff your ISP does it like this.

You should first try to get the WAN connection running before even trying the IPTV setup.

I don't really what IPTV is used for...
But it worked, So I Created the PPPoE in the Point-toPoint interface, mapped on the igco_vlan40. Then I assigned this last wan to my WAN.
I got an IP! But no internet.
After investigations it was due to a routing issue, I had to add a default routing manually to get internet working... Not sure why, not sure if it will not break if my ISP is cycling my IP address for some reason...

Thanks Meyergru!

Follow up question, did I really need the Vlan40 in the first place? Should have been good just using the Point-to-Point directly on the icg0? Don't really know why they lead me to create this Vlan...

There are two "usual" ways on how to do this:

1. PPPoE over a VLAN to get internet access - this will often have to use NAT for IPv4.
2. PPPoE over a physical interface to get internet access, plus a VLAN for a private routed RFC1918 network via DHCP which is exlusively used for IPTV (i.e. TV streaming over IP, if that is part of your plan).

That is why I told you to try to get internet working first. As it looks now, they use option 1 - I thought they used option 2 because you explicitely referenced a "VLAN for IPTV". Also, you do not seem to have much use for IPTV anyway, so it is best to get internet working in the first place.

Normally, your ISP will give detailed instructions on how to configure modems and / or routers to get access, often in form of a linkto a help page.
