Interface LAN problem after reboot
«

I have OPNSense version 18.1.4 installed on a Dell PowerEdge 1950.
The server has 4 Broadcom nics:
- 2 are embedded and are named as "bce0" (LAN) and "bce1" (WAN);
- 2 are on bus pci and are named as "bge0" (DMZ) and "bge1" (OPT2).
Everytime the firewall is restarted the LAN nic (bce0) is not reachable. If I unplug its network cable after a while this message appears on console: "/usr/src/sys/dev/if_bce.c(7886): whatchdog timeout resetting"
After that nic begins to work.
I tried to change the LAN interface binding it to "bge0" and after restart this nic does not have any problem.
I guess it's an issue belonging to "bce0" which is another chip. Maybe a driver issue?
How can I troubleshoot this?
Thanks a lot.
Michele.

I hoped I could have some advise.
Anyway I decided not to use that nic (bce0) and everything is ok now.
Could it be that bce0 shares the nic with IPMI (remote control service) Dell service? I even disabled it but still no luck.

Sorry for not seeing this post earlier.
There is a strangeness in that hardware setup. I would have recommended avoiding this NIC as well or at least switching it to be a different port to see if that makes any difference.
The latter would usually reveal setup issue / software bug if the reverse order is still buggy on the same port / NIC.
Cheers,

Hi Franco and don't worry for the late.
The problem is related to that nic: bce0.
I set it up as LAN, WAN, DMZ, changing order and address but in each case and after a reboot the nic is up but there's no way to ping it untill I unplug and plug the cable.
Why would you have raccomended to avoid that nic? You mean that Broadcom nic or what?
Dell 1950 has 2 identical broadcam nics (BCM5708) but only bce0 has problems, bce1 works like a charm.
Thanks, Michele.

NIC as in that particular port bce0. I would avoid using it if it shows to be problematic in different configurations. It indicates a hardware issue and these will always ruin your day some time as subtle as the quirk may be.
