Single WAN: CARP/HA possible?

I only have a single WAN connection, is it possible to configure an HA solution with this set-up? I have seen an article about this using pfsense on a French blog here:

would this work in OPNsense?

Try to set the WAN IP address to something like 10.255.255.1 and 2, then create a CARP VIP with the real IP, add a gateway with the real gateway address and check "Far gateway".
Could/Should work.

I'll give that a go in a short while, I'm in the middle of rewiring part of the house for my LAN.
Do I need a VLAN for the inbound WAN connection through a switch and then two (VLAN) connections to both of the OPNsense servers?
