DEC740 running hot, temperatures 55-60C+

Hi all,
Not sure if this is normal or not but my dec740 recently purchased is running about 50-55C.  Wondering if that is a normal range for this device.  I am running zenarmor, opnevpn, looking to run HAProxy as well.  Wanted to see what other experiences have been with this device.  I do live in Florida US so ambient temps here are a bit higher but the room is anywhere from 73-80F.  Just want to make sure nothing is wrong with my device.

Sustained 10GB transfers take the cpu temps to 65C+.

my DEC740 is located in a network cabinet in the basement. It runs a household with three people including two home office workstations, traffic shaping, OpenVPN and various VLANs. It's currently 16°C in the basement and the temperature of the DEC740 fluctuates somewhere between 33 and 35°C throughout the day with a bandwidth used of between 1 and 50 Mbps.

My DEC750 is running at 45c after a day of working from home over VPN.
PPPoE symmetrical gigabit fibre, Zenarmour
Has a 10g SFP+ to RJ45 module as well, which is a bit toasty

About 20c ambient

Yours sounds a little warm, but not overly so IMHO

Thanks for the responses guys my ambient temp is about 25C and i'm running about 57C on the cpu with my wife and I working from home. 

Can I ask if you have the original 4GB RAM setup or modified with more RAM? are you running 4 cores 8 threads or 4 cores 4 threads?

When I replaced my RAM and SSD, I noticed that the thermal coupling is not the best. I decided to remove the thermal paste and repastied it with something better.

Thanks Meyer, I did review these videos.  I did open the device and install a 16GB module but left the SSD original.  The thermal paste did look dry to me so I carefully wiped off the original paste and I applied some thermaltake TG 3 generously to make sure full coverage. 

At this point after doing all that I am running with 1x SFP 10G copper module with 16GB original SSD, replaced thermal paste.  I run Zenarmor with subscription, openvpn occasionally, HAProxy, maybe a few more apps in teh future.  We have 1 gig fiber internet to the house and the speed tests are fine no issues there.  The ambient temps in the room where the device sits are about 75-80F. At this time the device sits at 56.6C cpu temps with 4 cores 8 threads SMT enabled.  I did receive the device with SMT disabled for some reason not sure why but I had to manually go into bios and enable SMT to make 4 cores 8 threads.  Most reviews I saw mention that the device remains relatively cool, warm to the touch but not hot.  My device is HOT, cannot really keep your hand there for too long.  If that is normal then fine I have no issue and that is just how the device runs passively cooled I guess.  The SOC has a 105C junction temp rating.  I'm just concerned because I've never had any opnsense device run so hot and I purchased this from Deciso thinking it would be an optimal setup with the 10GB interfaces and enough performance for what I"m doing.   I didn't expect such high temps though.  But if that seems normal then it is what it is.  I did void the warranty by upgrade the ram and replacing the thermal paste so no going back there.  Just disappointed with the thermal profile of this device.

Sleepyal - what does your CPU usage look like?
That hot with low cpu is a concern, but if it's high CPU, it would look at what's causing that...

Mine is rarely above 20% CPU according to the GUI graphs, and warm to the touch

CPU usage is mostly sitting at 0% but can periodically spike to 50% every few minutes.  This with all the services i'm running that I've stated previously.

Can I ask what you're thermal sensor reading in the opnsense UI has in it? If you don't have it enabled you'd need to add the widget in the dashboard.

Yeah sure its saying 50°C.

While it may be slightly high, that is not a problematic temperature for a modern cpu.
