Some issues with the japanese and chinese translation
« on: July 11, 2016, 11:54:38 am »
Hi,

there is an issue with the Japanese and Chinese translation. The way to fix it: Install an additional font.
If you are using it on a system where the font is not installed, the page may look empty.

The question is, how this issue should be fixed. Does anyone know an open source font which can be used or have another idea?

Kind regards,

Fabian

Hi fabian,

I do not have that issue on my environment.
And it seems caused by your client environment, not by OPNsense.
Can you view other Japanese and Chinese web pages?
If your browser also can not view those pages, you need to install some fonts to your client individually.
When I use a FreeBSD box for the client machine, I usually install Japanese fonts from ports/japanese.

Best regards,

Hi Chie,

I know that the issue can be solved by installing an additional package on my system and this is how I solved the issue. The problem is, that this should not happen. The pages should always be readable because it is a bad idea to relay on the user having the fonts installed.

For this case it would be a good idea to supply a font: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/@font-face

However a font is required which can be loaded and this font needs to be released under a compatible license.

Kind regards,

Fabian

Hi fabian,

Your suggestion is very interesting.
However, I think Web Font is not an appropriate solution.
I am afraid your idea is useful only for not native Japanese or Chinese users.

At least, Japanese Web Font needs more time and resource to display text than system installed fonts.
If all text set up with Web Font, it might make OPNsense's behavior heavier.
I think the light behavior is one of the appealing features on OPNsense. And I would not like to lose it.

In addition, we use fonts not only browser, also other applications.
Therefore installing fonts is *required* for native Japanese and probably Chinese people, and we already had installed.

Best regards,
Chie
