Sky Q - no On Demand after rebooting
« on: August 29, 2021, 04:26:30 pm »
Just wanted to share a fix with everyone that I found - I'm in the UK and use Sky TV, their system uses the internal network to share the live TV around the house between the STBs along with allowing access to on-demand services and Netflix, etc.

After upgrading my firewall to 21.7 from 20.x the TVs all had the same issue - start the TV from a cold boot and the network works fine. Once you've turned the box off and on again the live TV continues to work but all on demand services say "It looks like you've not got an internet connection" along with a message telling you to go to the Settings menu where it'll tell you that your internet is perfectly fine. This was over wireless as well as Ethernet.

Sky blamed my ISP (which it wasn't) and were going to send a engineer out to the house in 2 weeks.

I had a poke around, I'm not sure if this was my fault or the update but I wasn't able to ping the firewall from any client on the LAN - once adding a firewall rule in to allow ICMP from all LAN devices the boxes started to work fine again.

It turns out that the Sky Q boxes will stop you from using any internet services if they cannot ping your default gateway. This isn't documented anywhere (as far as I'm aware) and their support were pretty useless, just sticking this out here in case anyone has any issues along these lines.
