Basic question
« on: July 07, 2019, 01:05:27 pm »
If I install OpnSense, will I be able to add FreeBSD packages (of interest are Plex-Media server, and NextCloud or equivalent file sync)?
I have a cube pc that I run as a headless server (currently Ubuntu Linux).
Thanks for your reply!

In theory you can enable the repository but that is highly discouraged because it may break the system. If you really need some unsupported packages, you can build them directly from the ports tree.

For nextcloud I don't know if you want to install the client or the server. The client is very unlikely to work as OPNsense has no desktop. The server may run if you install the nginx plugin.

You can install OPNsense on the bare metal or in a virtual machine then.

I may give it a shot.  I'm a newbie to BSD, been a Linuxer for 20+ years.  I can fairly easily put my Ubuntu installation back if I think OpnSense isn't working for me.  It would be the server, but I can fairly easily live with a hosted service (like dropbox) vs hosting my own.  My media collection is another matter though.
Ports is a good idea, remember the BSD world is unfamiliar to me, but compiling code isn't really. :)

I'll have to give it a shot today or tomorrow.  I'm still trying to recover from turning my world upside down and reconfigure the network yesterday (and failing back this morning after all night with no wireless internet).
Thank you very much for your assurances.

I have everything connected to the internet happily and am working on the ports now.  Thank you.
