Hello everybody,

the idea is to use OPNsense as system software on hardware that can provide POE+ on a few ports. Ask me 2 questions:

1. Are there any considerations to implement this in OPNsense/HardenedBSD (Plugin?) or what would this mean for effort? (e.g. turn POE on and off via GUI per interface)
2. Which hardware with minimum POE+/802.3at ?

1. Is there any reason to implement this in OPNsense / HardenedBSD or what would that be an expense?

Why would anything need to change in OPNsense? BSD is not aware of its power supply in general, with the exception of UPS signalling.

Are there any AMD64 boards out there, that can provide POE on their NICs?

This has dual NIC's with PoE and quad-core Atom Braswell (64-bit and AES NI): https://www.solid-run.com/intel-braswell-family/solidpc-q4/

ah I got it.

you want a board or system that's running OPNsense to have POE built in on it and NOT a separate switch or dongle.

Never seen one but it's not impossible. More failure points on a main board maybe.
The Braswell looks interesting but hard to find documentation for it to see what the poe situation is on the board.

Have you looked into Ubiquiti? You might be able to get some of their software running on the OPNsense box to control their switch from OPNsense?

@gazpl
nice. thanks

Update Spec to minimum POE+/802.3at
