I'd like to know what the default value is (enabled or disabled) for the VLAN Hardware Filtering.

The "leave default" default is not to trigger the disable / enable at all. Some earlier FreeBSD versions had issues when toggling the flag even if it was not transitioning from enabled to disable or disabled to enabled. Enabled/disabled defaults may vary per driver.
