General Discussion / Re: Subnet issue

Did you try to connect a machine to WIFI and test the basics? Got IP, ping, DNS, ...

So...I tried this just now...laptop won't connect with the wifi port unless I manually enter the IP. It's like the OPN DHCP service is not running even though it says it is. I tried  ISC and Kea DHCP...same results.

Duh...I don't know why I didn't think of that. I'll plug my laptop into it.

But I did try other cables before. Same result.

Quote from: meyergru on February 03, 2025, 06:59:18 PMYou can try switching the assignments of the non-working port with one of the working ports. That should clarify if it is a port or a setup problem.

Easiest would be to exchange WAN and WIFI.

Also: How did you bridge the ports? One bridge for each port giving vtnet0-vtnet3 on OpnSense?

Yeah. I'll try that.

Yes..One bridge per port. Vtnet0-3

Quote from: lilsense on February 03, 2025, 06:57:36 PMHow do you accomplish this??? The two ports you mentioned are 10Gig SFP+ and the other two are 2.5Gig Copper.

It's simple..proxmox allows you create Linux bridges for each eth port. Then in the opnsense VM, you add hardware (ethernet) ports that reference the Linux bridges. Only way OPNsense sees them in the interfaces assignment.

General Discussion / Subnet issue

Greetings. I have a minisforum MS-01 that I am using as a proxmox host running OPN in a VM. I bridged over all 4 eth ports on host, then on the OPNsense VM, I created the 4 eth ports so that the installer would see the eth ports. They are set up as follows:

WAN - 2.5gb port
LAN - 10gb port
WIFI - 2.5gb port
TEST - 10gb port

WAN port set for DHCP and picks up external IP no problem. Router is in bridge mode. Ethtool port checks in host console verifies they are connected and active.

LAN, WIFI, TEST all have just a basic ipv4 rules allow all/any for simplicity while setting up.

LAN, WIFI, TEST are set to static IP (192.168.1.0/24 through 192.168.3.0/24, respectively) with DHCP server enabled on each.

LAN and TEST work just fine. WIFI does not. I can put a wireless AP on either LAN or TEST and it will work but not on WIFI. I tried 2 different brands of wireless APs and it will not work on the WIFI subnet.

I have no idea why. Can someone shed some troubleshooting tips?

I am getting this exact issue too.

Saw an old legacy thread about changing WAN from DHCP to static, not sure what you would put in the IP on the WAN.

General Discussion / Gateway setup
January 23, 2024, 02:30:14 AM
I currently have an ATT modem that I plan to put in IP passthrough. It's gateway is 192.168.1.254.

I put the OPNsense LAN port static IP as 192.168.1.1. Plan to enable DHCP range of 192.168.1.40-192.168.1.200.

I have bunch of static IP devices between .1-.39.

In the OPNsense gateway settings, would I enter 192.168.1.1 since it is the new router?

General Discussion / WAN/LAN setup help/advice
January 11, 2024, 04:41:00 PM
Hello...I have a 4-port nuc that I want to use as a router using proxmox and opnsense in a VM. I am having a hard time understanding the settings within opnsense regarding WAN/LAN

So here's my setup:

Proxmox:
1. In the proxmox node, I create vmbr0-vmbr3 bridges. Shut off firewall rules for each port.
2. vmbr0 will be my assigned WAN port. I do not assign CIDR/Gateway to the port.
3. vmbr1 is my LAN port. I assign a CIDR/Gateway to the port. 192.168.1.2/24 | 192.168.1.254

opnsense VM settings (within Proxmox):
1. I add network bridges for net0-net3 and assign them vmbr0-vmbr3, respectively.
2. Install opnsense, run root, assign WAN/LAN ports. Run installer.

ATT Modem:
1. ATT Modem in IP Passthrough with DHCP-Fixed. I select the assigned WAN vmbr0 port's MAC address on the nuc.
2. I shut off the DHCP server in the ATT Modem.
3. I shut off all the firewall rules in the ATT modem.

This is where it gets tricky for me:

Opnsense webgui:
1. WAN port does not pull a public IP. Do I have to select IPv4 Config type to DHCP? (when I do, it pulls a local IP, even though I have Block private/bogan networks enabled) Do I have to enter in the MAC address of the vmbr0 port from the opnsense VM settings?
2. LAN port is 192.168.1.2 from the proxmox setup. This is presumably to be access the webgui. I want this port to be the DHCP server. So, if I enable DHCP server, put in my range as 192.168.1.1-192.168.253. It shouldn't affect the webgui access IP of 192.168.1.2? Do I also have to put in the MAC address of the vmbr1 bridge as well?

Thanks in advance.
