Luckily full size DDR4.  Only the 2nd time in my life for a memory failure...annoying frustrating to nail down as its so random.

Yep, it's an asrock n100m board, running bios 1.10.  I see an update that says microcode and memory compatibility. https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/N100M/index.asp#BIOS

Ugh, failing with a hd just swapped in, maybe bad memory?  What's weird is I can re-install just fine, but it updates fail.  hmm

interesting, just swapped it out and reinstalling.

The 1st picture is where is hangs.

I have a very very vanilla install. the only stuff I change is the default DNS to cloudflare and i use 3 blocklists via unbound.

I tried to update to 26.7.2_2 from 26.7.1 but it hard failed so I had to reinstall 26.7. 

Once installed I tried another upgrade and it hard failed again at a different spot (earlier)

I'm beginning to wonder if I have a hardware problem.

have you tried opnsense 21.1 yet?

I've tried to upgrade mulitple time now but it keeps failing before it even starts.
