I've tried to upgrade mulitple time now but it keeps failing before it even starts.

Any ideas? I have a pretty vanilla setup.

Try rebooting before the upgrade, which is always prudent
Are you upgrading from the console?

A bit difficult to say, although pretty clear that "tar" command is failing here. Maybe not enough memory (disk, RAM, SWAP) for tar to unpack?
