Changing Interface Name Breaks VPN?

I have an OpenVPN instance running on a vlan such that anything on that vlan goes through the VPN. The device is ovpnc1, the assigned interface is named (for example) ABC_Interface. Everything works; so far, so good.

Let's say that I want to rename ABC_Interface to something else (e.g. XYZ_Interface). All of a sudden, traffic on the VPN vlan is going out on the regular WAN. Changing the name back to ABC_Interface restores desired VPN functionality.

Seems like something somewhere is still carrying the original interface name and interfering with routing. Thoughts?

it changes the gateway rule back to the default which is usually wan.

that seems expected to me until you fix where the gateway / data should be sent

Why do think this?

Changing the interface name changes the gateway name accordingly as well. The routing is based on the gateway name, but that's probably not changed in existing rules. Hence the rule will be omitted.

I think I have seen another topic about this recently and the conclusion was that it's normal and to be expected IIRC :)
