Restored Backup Login Issue

I have run into an issue restoring a backup to a new device and I am wondering if anyone have some ideas on what might be going wrong.

My house took a surge from a lightning strike which took out my Opnsense device. Even though it was on a UPS/surge, it appears the current came through the cable modem onto the CAT6 and to the router.

Thankfully I take daily backups onto Nextcloud, which are encrypted, and I had a spare device that had an older (23.7) version of unconfigured Opnsense already on it.

My last backup was taken using the most current version of Opnsense (25.1). I assume this may be where my problem lies, but I'll continue.

I was able to restore the backup and on restart everything appears correct. However, I am unable to log in with the same credentials I was using on my previous device and what should have been included within the backup. I'm almost certain that root access was disabled on my setup.

I was unable to update the 'new' device to the most current Opnsense version due to not having internet service from my provider due to the same storm.

Would anyone happen to have any ideas on why login credentials would not work on the restored device?

Thank you for any feedback.

Can you reset the password using the procedure described here ?
