What sort if work is necessary on the BIOS of an old/established piece of hardware?

Once the boot loader is loaded from disk the job is done. As long as the device continues to do that I do not see a need for any BIOS update. The OS runs in protected mode, all real mode code is irrelevant at that point.

I might be missing something - what?  ;)

Hi pmhausen,

so you think all Bios updates from all Manufacturers should be ignored?

Frequently they come with release notes stating which problems are fixed. And I do install these depending on what they are doing. The APU line of devices is so old - what exactly do you expect to still need fixes? Once the device is booted, the BIOS is irrelevant, isn't it? All hardware is reset and initialised by the protected mode OS?

Hi pmhausen,

this hardware(e.g. Processor GX-412TC) is old but a LTS version from AMD. You can buy it until next year and ask support. PCENGINES has also made a marriage here. This is what it's all about!
And NO, not all Hardware will be reset by the OS that would be really bad!

I hope you are just trolling here, and not serious. Have you seen the coreboot open issues on APU? For example if some ACPI entries are wrong in the BIOS, no OS-level sorcery will make it work. And thats just 1 type of problem, why the BIOS must be error free.
