Hello everyone,

I ordered a N100 with 4x 2,5 Gbit Intel NICs. I installed OPNsense in version 24.1.6. After some time it restarts and I receive the message, that there is crash report.

I attached the report. I hope someone can help me here, as I don't understand it. I don't hope it is something with the hardware.

If anything else is needed, I will be happy to provide it here.

Make sure you read up on how to install the latest Intel microcode to make it behave.

Cheers,
Franco

Hi Franco,

Thank you for your swift reply. I installed the cpu-microcode package and followed the steps. After a reboot I can see the following in dmesg:
root@OPNsense:~ # dmesg | grep microcode
CPU microcode: updated from 0xe to 0x15

Looks good. I will monitor now the uptime. Anything else I have to do now?

Well, enjoy?! :)

Seriously it should be good now.

Cheers,
Franco

Yeah :):)

Unfortunately it just restarted right now :/

What can I check? Sorry for the hazzle

The boot log won't help. Seeing you have UFS that's going to be breaking the file system sooner or later.

Don't you have a kernel panic with this? Or does it just turn off/back on... could be a power supply issue.

Cheers,
Franco

Or, if you bought the unit without RAM, change it for another brand. These things are sometimes picky.
Intel N100, 4 x I226-V, 16 GByte, 256 GByte NVME, ZTE F6005

1100 down / 800 up, Bufferbloat A+

Thanks again for your replies. I can provide the /var/crash/textdump.tar.0, that is visible through the UI. Would that be helpful?

I can reinstall with ZFS and reimport the configuration? Shall I try that?

I bought the machine without RAM and SSD. I bought both separate. I can try to find another power supply for it.

Textdump would be very helpful indeed. I need the first bits from the backtrace, but you can skip the repetitive process info.

Cheers,
Franco

I hope it isn't too much and it helps. Thank you in advance.

This could be memory related indeed. Not a functional panic (pertaining to network stack crashes or such).

Cheers,
Franco

Now I am curious as well,

Your N100 is it a CWWK unit or any other offbrand?

Because if yes, what above was said is 100% true. Even the sellers themself specify that not all RAM kits work with these devices properly.

What kind of RAM do you have there?

Regards,
S.
Networking is love. You may hate it, but in the end, you always come back to it.

N5105 - i226-V | Patriot 2x8G 3200 DDR4 | L 790 512G - VM HA(SOON)
N100   - i226-V | Crucial 16G  4800 DDR5 | S 980 500G - PROD

Same problem as here, I guess.

There is no clear indication on what brand works best, sometimes it seems that you just get a bad batch and even switching to a new specimen does the trick. I would go for another brand just in case. Also, use low CL memory - a faster frequency than standard (4800 Mhz for DDR5) will probably not get used anyway.
Intel N100, 4 x I226-V, 16 GByte, 256 GByte NVME, ZTE F6005

1100 down / 800 up, Bufferbloat A+

My N100 is a TOPTON unit, from Aliexpress.

I am having one Crucial CT16G48C40S5 stick installed. It has 16 GB, 4800 MHz and 40 CL.

I will try to stresstest with Memtest86+. Does it make sense?

Which RAM can you recommend?

Mostly its test and try. You can ask the seller what they recommend.

I have a TopTon N5105 as seen in my description and run those units with Patriot RAM (PSD48G320081S), those so far seem stable.

P.S. Maybe avoid as well DDR5.

S.
