Hi,
Warning: Noobie here

I have been a recent Ubiquiti user re router and UniFi.
The EdgeRouter has become redundant, and I have moved to OPNSense on a Mac Mini. Works great and seems stable. I also attach the UniFi onto the network, and it is transparent and works, first time!

However, I want to implement vlans/QoS/etc. and my current Netgear smartswitch is NOT suitable (it is to be fair rather old).

The replacement must have at least 8 port of 1Gb or higher. Not fussed re POE as I have been using injectors.

Looking for suggestions please - other than ridiculous overprice switches from "some" vendors.
Any folks with experiences?

You can even run OpenWRT on it.

If you are stuck on OpenWRT, then you might as well buy a computer that can hold several network cards and build your own software defined LAN.

I have a couple Mikrotik CRS level of switches, they are decent and cheap. I'm not bothered by open source or die. I also have several old Cisco 2960s and some new Extreme 5420 and 1 Netgear M4250. Pick your battles based on what you need to do or what you can afford. Work gets expensive stuff, home lab gets what I can find on ebay. All of it works within the limits of it's software at the time of purchase, some gets regular updates.

Stuck on what ? What are you talking about ? Im using OPNSense on my servers just like everyone in here. I am not running OpenWRT on my switch nor im advising anyone to do so. My post was directed to Patrick M. Hausen as a proof of how open D-Link enterprise switches are. You dont care about opensource, but we do.

You make this post about you and what you use rather than helping TS make a right choice. Nobody cares about your proprietary overpriced closed source Cisco, Netgear and MikroTik garbage. But i do agree with your statement that you should get what you can afford. With that said...

If you dont need PoE, go get D-Link DGS-1210-10 for 99$
If you need PoE, go get D-Link DGS-1210-10P for 160 $

Hi,

Well, I went ahead with the Macmini (2012 & 8GB) as my OPNSense Router with eth and miniport eth 1Gb each)
Works like a dream. I have configured my VLANs etc. Good so far

For the switch I have go ahead with the Mikotik CRS310-iG-5S-4S+ (10G box). It turns out it is a router and a switch! Nevertheless, I have implemented the switch side (SwitchOS) and it is snappy! Seems to be a great buy and is relatively cheap.

I run speedtest-cli at my own Mac Mini and get numbers of 930Mb on a 1Gb WAN! Brilliant!

Now I am in the phase of implementing the VLAN at switch level and finalise the overall implementation. Hopefully with many glitches to overcome.

I would not want openwrt as OS on a switch. Personally I'd go with Mikrotik, TP-Link Jetstream series, or Cisco CBS250 / 350.
