If you use Gateway Monitor IP addresses like 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.84.4 you want to "Disable Host Route" for these addresses otherwise you loose access to a DNS server when the route goes down.

I'm finding if I "Disable Host Route" and ensure the route is removed dpinger will just declare the gateway as up.

I'm guessing dpinger relies on these routes rather than binding the the specific interface and sending out over that interface only.

You could continue to those 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 IP addresses for your gateway monitor and for your DNS use something different such as:

  • Your ISPsrecommended / provided DNS servers
or
  • CloudFlare's excellent public DNS servers 1.1.1.1 & 1.0.0.1

Well, no. If you want to use multi-WAN please set it up correctly:

https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/how-tos/multiwan.html#example-configuration

FWIW, people ask for overrides and stuff like this for a very very specific reason and then the next guy not having that particular issue falls into the trap of using this override to do something that it cannot do.
