Can't Access Web Interface or Ping LAN with Direct Ethernet Connection

Hi,
I am very new to OPNsense, but hoping someone can help me. I have a fresh install with a PCIe 2-port card. My LAN is on igb0 and it shows an IP address of 192.168.1.1/24. If I program the Ethernet on my laptop to 192.168.1.2 with 24 bit subnet mask and no gateway, and plug directly into igb0 (link state changes to up in console on my monitor), neither OPNsense or my laptop can ping each other. I also can not access the web interface as the page simply doesn't load. I've tried restoring the defaults and no change. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

This is no longer an issue. I realized I had a VLAN configured in the advanced settings of my laptop's NIC. Once I set the VLAN to the default setting of 0, it is now able to obtain an IP using DHCP, and access the OPNsense web interface.
