config optimizer / tuner / validator / linter ?

so.... I don't know if this is
A) already done, old news, not exciting
B) A TERRIBLE IDEA. RUN SCREAMING
C) Harder than its worth.

( admittedly some combination of all of the above, probably )

but I was thinking that there's probably value in a common tool used to validate one's config, as well as to provide some guidance on tuning hardware... I was thinking about something along the lines of mysqltuner.pl ... a tool to look at your running ruleset, and performance, and offer some optimization guidance, or providing a tool to help get a consistent baseline for the forums. *shrug*

has this already been done? discussed and laughed about?  I didn't see anything about this in the forums,  so figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.
