I'd like to use OPNSense on a Lanner fw-7551a, which appears to be identical to the Netgate FW-7551 .  No VGA, only serial .

I can't get OPNSense to boot off a USB drive after burning the img with Rufus. I tried 3 different USB drives, different brands and capacities, same issue. I even tried    OPNSense 21.1, can't get that to boot either.

As a test, I was able to install pfsense using Rufus , burining the img to a usb drive with  no issues.

I'd rather use OPNSense,
The BIOS is set to boot from USB key, and like I said, the pfsense boots fine.
Any suggestions?

Thanks Bruce

Hello tbird35,

I tried to generate an install key with the image OPNsense-21.7-OpenSSL-serial-amd64, upload to two different servers and two different USB drives.
There is indeed a priming, however, the system aborts.

From my software library I just regenerated the OPNsense-20.1-OpenSSL-serial-amd64 image on my key or I overwrote the OPNsense-21.7-OpenSSL-serial-amd64 image.
The usual procedure in console mode (DB9 + putty) & (In the PUTTY console in SSH on 192.168.1.1: 22 enter Login as: installer + Pssw entry: opnsense + enter) works normally.

If I understood correctly version 21.7 has been rewritten. Reading the posts, many of us have disappointments, let this new version mature. No one is perfect, I know something about it.

So the thinking here is, I should try ssh on the vga or DVD image? Or should I try an older image such as 20.1?

Most of the time the issue is writing a GPT stick from Windows. If you have a Linux/BSD around a simple dd of the uncompressed image will definitely work.

I will give that a shot. I do have linux on my laptop.

But... I took that Rufus created usb stick and was able to boot it up on my laptop, so I'm thinking my issue is with EFI and the lack of it on the Lanner FW-7551a.

I think it may not have an EFI bios, and may be legacy mbr install only.

in which case, is there a legacy install-only  image available?

The UEFI boot is supposed to be hybrid, but you can either try the latest Nano image and after log in choose option 8 and type "opnsense-installer" or you can try the older 20.7 serial images that don't have UEFI hybrid boot yet.

Cheers,
Franco
