Config restore bricks the system

OPNsense newbie here.
I run OPNsense 20.7 on a Proxmox VM. My setup has a WAN (static IP), LAN and 2 VLANs. If I backup the config using the UI and restore the same XML again on the same screen, OPNsense stops working after restart. I don't see any error messages on the UI and no error messages shown while restarting OPNsense. But the admin portal does not start after the restart and internet does not work either.
If I login to the OPNsense shell on Proxmox VNC and restore the config to the previous checkpoint, everything starts working again. I have tested this numerous times and I have deleted and recreated the OPNsense VM from the scratch several times, but I still can't get rid of the issue. Please help.
