Intel Xeon D-2146NT performance?
« on: July 12, 2019, 03:31:43 pm »
Today I have a cobbled together Xeon E3-1230 v6 system and looking to replace it with a newer Supermicro SYS-5019D-FN8TP with the Xeon D-2146NT.

My system is supporting my symmetrical 1000/1000 fiber at my house now without issues and I don't run an IDS/IPS yet but may in the future and just a private VPN for when I am at work to get back to the home.

I was planning to use the E3 as another ESXi server in the home and I run OPNsense bare metal so kind of over-killed the current setup I think with the E3.

Thoughts?

I think those 8 cores/16 threads will be overkill (though not sure HardenedBSD in OPNsense has HT disabled) will be overkill for your connection.

Right now I have a 500/40 cable connection using a AMD GX-420CA SOC, which is an older SOC even, and it does about 18% when downloading (no IPS/IDS) at 535 Mbps.
This SOC is simple compared to that Xeon D. So I really think you'll be fine.

Is this a pppoe dialup? If yes you might be limited by 600mbit per stream. Sure overkill but pppoe and Gigabit is tricky within BSD

No, AT&T fiber using GPON with 802.1x.
