Hi Everyone!
new here :)

I'm wondering and need your advise - should the OPNSense be on a dedicated machine (without VMware\ProxMox etc.) or it can run as a VM part of Proxmox?

I'm asking because I have an old laptop (https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd105049-product-overview-lenovo-v110-15ikb) that currently has ProxMox and OPNsense as a VM. this Lenovo has (IN TOTAL) 12 gigs of RAM, 256 disk and an i5 CPU currently.

AND --- I have an Intel NUC i7 gen 8 with 8 RAM and 128 disk (which both can be improved if needed) which I use barely, as the living room PC (attached to my LED TV), most of its time it sleeps LOL.
I wonder if a NUC pc is able to run 24\7 with no heating issues. I can't tell right now if the OPN will be the only VM on the NUC, or maybe by time I will add more.

shoot!

THANKS!

OPN can run virtualised, no problem. I do now. Before it was baremetal.
BUT, the chosen appliance has multiple NICs.
As long as you have one nic for wan and another for lan, either works fine. Avoid USB and Realtek nic interfaces for production even for home use. Lab/learning with them is fine.
