when  modem is rebooted, but not opnsense router I have  no internet.

if I reboot opnsense router then WAN port comes up and internet is available again.

obviously this is a pain.  most router these days detect WAN interface state and come back online without having to be rebooted. is there a setting I can change to make  the WAN interface reset after it goes down?

also.  is there a way to prevent a service from starting automatically? specifically after rebooting the openVPN client service starts up. I use this on occasion and don't want it to start on reboot. how can I change this to "manual"
thanks in advance,

Is your gateway monitor running when you bounce the modem?

You can set an OpenVPN client to disabled and enable it when you need it.

Bart...

I'm going to ask my crystal ball: is your WAN port using the em(4) driver on OPNsense 16.7.x?

There is no way to prevent a client from starting short of disabling it. :)

thanks for the replies.

Franco,

can I check the driver from the Gui? or would I have to console in to do that? If I find out  it is the driver you mention what are my options?
thanks,

bartjsmit ,

when I check the Gateway Status monitor = none  so I assume not.  this isn't enabled by default?

ok,  looked through the WAN config and cleared the check for "Disable Gateway Monitoring" added 8.8.8.8 as monitor IP.

checked status and everything is listed as pending.

You can see the driver name from the Interfaces: Assignments page in the drop down box for WAN (first word).

I assume "em" is the driver and (0) is the port number? see below

Yes, we have a winner. Install the "os-intel-em" plugin and reboot. This link state issue is a known issue in FreeBSD since 10.3.

It should work after that with the original Intel driver. :)

Franco

Thanks Fanco!,

It's installed. I'll schedule a reboot and see how we do.
