Need help with Unbound Dynamic DNS and DHCP setup

I have a new Opnsense setup that is replacing a Unifi USG.  I only mention Unifi because what I desire was the default behavior with Unifi and there is nothing I am trying to do that should be difficult.

I have OpnSense as my gateway to my ISP.  I user 'local' as my LAN domain name.  I have several workstations on my network.  A mix of Windows, Linux, Roku, TV, ...   Most are DHCP clients.  There are a few that are statically assigned.

Everything works as long as DNS can be resolved on internet DNS (1.1.1.1 and/or 8.8.8.8).
What does not work is DNS resolution for my local area network (neither the dynamic nor the static).

I can access any of the local nodes by using the IP address, so the network itself is not the issue.
I was hoping that such a vanilla setup would just work, but sadly that is not the case.  Hope is not a plan.

Anyway, I have had no luck deciphering the documentation.  Also all of my attempts to find an applicable YT or forum post have yielded a bunch of stuff that does not address my issue.

Please, anyone that can guide an OpnSense noob will be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Jim

Hi,

did you read the statement for "Domain" here?
https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/settingsmenu.html#general

In general, once you chose a domain make sure to check DHCP Registration and DHCP Static Mappings
See here: https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/unbound.html#general-settings

The .local TLD is reserved for mDNS. Better pick something like mydomain.lan ...
