I do not understand what newsense was saying.

What you are saying is:
*Plug the OPNsense WAN cable into my switch?
*Plug my PC into the OPNsense LAN socket
*What happens to my Router/modem
*What happens to my NBN thing that connects to the outside world?
*What happens to my other PC’s connected to the Switch

I thought the internet comes into the house and  it goes into the OPNsense box and then into the switch. Then I have no idea what happens then.

I will try and disconnect from the internet and configure the OPNsense box.

If that is the final setup that you want to implement, you are right.

Internet --> modem --> OPNsense WAN | OPNsense LAN --> Switch --> PC

But your current router already does everything OPNsense is supposed to do and it uses the same IP addresses as OPNsense. You cannot run both at the same time. So you need to disconnect your old router and instead of plugging OPNsense WAN into the switch plug it into the modem and OPNsense LAN into the switch. Then you can connect to the UI at 192.168.1.1 and configure your WAN credentials for your ISP ...

Just to confirm:
*I plug the OPNsense WAN into the modem
*I plug OPNsens LAN into the Switch.
*Then on the OPNsense PC I configure the WAN credentials for my ISP
I have 2 additional Questions:

1.   Where do I find my ISP credentials
2.   What do I do with the NBN Box.
FYI here in AU: we have a copper wire from the road to a box in the house, then connect the output of this box to the WAN of the modem.

Does than mean I plug the WAN cord into the NBN box?

The credentials should have been provided by the ISP. How did you configure your existing router?

The OPNsense WAN goes into the Ethernet port of the modem.

If the connection is provided that way. Do you have a separate router and modem? If router and modem are one and the same box, you cannot simply replace it with OPNsense. You either need to set this box to strict modem mode or buy a separate modem. All of this depends on your type of connection, the exact modem and/or router model and your ISP ...

What do you want to achieve in the end? Your Internet is working, right?

The last resort would be to connect OPNsense to your existing router but you must change IP addresses first and then you have double NAT and the question is in which way this will improve anything.

I thought OPNsense would make the internet safer. But ... I have no idea how to make it work.

In the most common use case OPNsense replaces a simple consumer "plastic" router provided by your ISP. But you need all information concerning the configuration of your uplink technology (cable, fibre, DSL, ...) and if applicable username and password for PPPoE. Nobody but your ISP can give you that information.

If you want to run OPNsense behind an existing ISP router, that is entirely possible so the setup would be

Internet --> ISP router/modem --> OPNsense WAN | OPNsense LAN --> switch --> client PCs/devices

But as we already saw from your first attempts your ISP router uses the 192.168.1.x network. So you must use a different network for OPNsense LAN. You cannot use the same addresses on two different networks.

If adding OPNsense behind an ISP router "adds security" again heavily depends ...

I followed your instructions - brilliant.

I changed the LAN IP address and the OPNsense box is connected to the ISP modem and the LAN cord is connected to the switch. This has allowed me to use the wi-fi.

I have not changed any settings in OPNsense. I managed to update the software.

You have been very patient. Thank you.

Any suggestions for any You tube videos? I wanted to use OPNsense because my VPN was stopping my internal PC’s on the network from being visible.
