Application filter: without zenarmor plugin

Hii,
I was trying to implement an application filter on the Opnsense firewall, Is there any way to do so WITHOUT the Zenarmor plugin? Please guide whether we can use Suricata towards the same, will it be a full-fledged application filter (requirement is filtering applications, group-wise or individual application-wise, do we have application signature, db, etc.)or an alternate mechanism for the same?
