When I enable SSH it breaks WAN

running OPNsense 23.1.3-amd64 in Proxmox

Twice now I have enabled SSH (once with root login, once with a new user created) and have then gone on to ssh in.  (worked fine).  Almost immediately I lose WAN access.  I can see on the dashboard that my ipv4 address is 0.0.0.0  and nothing I do (reboot, enable/disable interface, restart cable modem (bridge mode)) resolves is until I disable SSH access and reboot modem and opnsense.

I do not see anythign in the logs except that it cannot get an IP address with a bunch of:
2023-04-18T17:15:10-05:00 Warning opnsense /usr/local/etc/rc.bootup: ROUTING: not a valid host gateway address: ''

Any thoughts on what to look at next? I'd like to be able to ssh into the server from the LAN.

I'm not great at debugging Opnsense, but would like to get better.

Thanks.

I do have xfinity, my modem is in bridge mode.  Somewhere I read to enable "refuse dhcp from <lan> side of modem - I tried that, but did not appear to help.
