Hi all,

I'm new to OPNsense, so fare I like it. I did use and unifi Edgerouter X where I have plugged in an smart Wifi Airties 4096 I believe.
can I do that on OPNsense to be able to get wifi support? or do I need to look for an USB wifi dongle?

My system:
I use an Protectli FW4B

Airties :
these are connected with an eth cable from the port1 on the AirTies to the OPT1 on the Protectli

If these can behave like a regular access point, it should be fine.
If you connect one on a separate port on the OPN device, wireless devices and wired devices will end up on separate networks.
There are couple ways to remedy this situation if it does not meet your needs. Use a physical switch between OPN and the access point or bridge the ports in OPN.

thanks for the reply !

so you mean put an switch in OPT1 on protectli and the wifi cable in the switch and that should work?

I meant to use a switch on the LAN interface.
A Wi-Fi access point is essentially a wireless switch. You just extend that physical network.

If you were to use a separate interface (e.g. OPT1), you'd get another physical network.
It's not like both networks would not be able to communicate, but it takes more effort.

Again, I assumed that these devices can operate as access points.
I looked briefly for some documentation, and it used that nomenclature, but all configuration is apparently done in an app. I gave up looking for more info...

I managed to get it working :-)

I put an switch between the OPN device, then OPN LAN -> switch port 2 then wifi cable to switch port 3 and one cable from OPN lan to switch port 1

A switch is a simple network device (the simplest after hosts).
One port uplink towards the router, other ports to other switches or hosts. A simple tree extending the network.
An access port is a wireless switch. One port uplink towards the router (in this case via a switch). Then "ports" for each wireless hosts.

Your description has OPN LAN used twice... It's hard to plug 2 cables in the same port!
I imagine your PC (used to access OPN) is also plugged into the switch.
