OPNSense in VirtualBox; No login

Hello!
I am a newb when it comes to firewall setup and networking in general. I am currently trying to install OPNsense v20.1 32x in virtualbox on a dell poweredge 2900 gen II server with Linux Mint to serve as a home network firewall. I have run across a good handful of issues through out this process but have mostly been able to overcome them. Except this one. Here is where I am at; I have run the installer on the virtual machine and have OPNsense running on it's own in the VM. However as it boots, towards the end, it doesn't give me a place to login with 'root' and the password I created in the installer. It just stops after the hash as you can see.

It will also occasionally come up with '[hbsd aslr] pax_aslr_init_vmspace check your /boot/loader.conf' after the hash. What that means, other than to check my /boot/loader.conf, I haven't a clue. I would be so grateful if someone here who has more knowledge than I do could help me out. I can totally provide any more info one might need as well.

Hi there,

Which image type is this?

Nano -> shouldn't happen, both serial and VGA console login work
DVD -> VGA console login only
VGA -> VGA console login only
Serial -> Serial console login only

I am using the DVD image type.

Something is wrong with the VGA console in the host then. I cannot reproduce this issue with the defaults in OPNsense and VirtualBox.

What if you try the amd64 image?

I was using that one originally because I knew the system was 64x but ran into issues there so I tried the 32 bit since virtualbox only gave me a 32x FreeBSD option and it worked. But I will try the 64x again since I have more knowledge now than I did when I started this project.

When I tried to run the amd64 I get the error 'CPU Does not support long mode'. It gives me the option to hit enter to boot or hit any key to get a command prompt but it then sticks me with an 'OK' prompt and whenever I hit enter it just kicks down to another OK prompt.


If I type '?' the following comes up

If your CPU doesn't support long mode, the general consensus seems to be; Use a 32bit distribution. If it's not a BIOS issue, you should perhaps start looking for newer hardware. The upcoming 20.7 version will be 64bit only.

I figured that would probably be someone's response lol. I may end up looking into another firewall software at some point but I think this is the end of the road for me on this one since I am not entirely interested in upgrading hardware even though I have been toying with the idea. Thanks for all your guys' help!

Update: I decided to try enabling virtualization in the bios and IT WORKED!!! I am so happy! Thanks a million miroco

Simplest solution:Dont create a freebsd Mchine in Virtualbox.
Create a Debian 64bit machine and install Opnsense.

Please demonstrate how to install OPNsense on Debian Linux ...
