[Solved] Intel Gigabit (em) driver is missing. FreeBSD 12 works out of the box

Previous topic - Next topic
I bought an Intel Pro Dual gigabit NIC that is not being detected by opnsense. Installing FreeBSD 12 and it works out of the box without needing a driver.

I tried to compile the if_em.ko from source then copy to /boot/kernerl but kldload complained.

I found an older discussion for 16.7 where some steps were shared - I thought the "os-intel" package was created for this driver? I don't see it anywhere now.

Here is the NIC being detected just fine in BSD 12:

I should have added more info, sorry (late nights troubleshooting). It doesn't work on Promox with PCIe passthrough. Driver was blacklisted on the host, rebooted. Windows VM see the device just fine and get IPs.

OPNSENSE dmesg and relevant host settings below.

After several hours troubleshooting I found that for some reason QEMU/Proxmox + Passthrough + OPNsense with setting "pcie=on" will not work correctly with this card.

After editing this
hostpci0: 02:00,pcie=1

to

hostpci0: 02:00

the interfaces started working and being detected. In FreeBSD 12 it works with the pcie setting.
