I have 2 choices of network setup... Which do you all prefer and why?

MODEM<-static->OPNsense<-DHCP->HUB<-->SERVER&WORKSTATIONS (OPNsense serves DHCP)

MODEM<-statc->OPNsense<-static->SERVER<-DHCP->HUB&WORKSTATIONS (Server serves DHCP)

In the second option the server has a WAN Port for the OPNsense appliance and a LAN port to serve the workstations

FOr the second option I need to know how to setup a static IP between the server and OPNsense appliance

Changed my mind..I think that I will setup with SERVER serving DHCP and use DHCP reservations. Using this setup..

That is how I do it too.
DHCP, DNS and NTP are handled by internal Windows Domain Controllers.
NTP only on a physical machine, DHCP in a failover setup and DNS using both Domain Controllers with Active Directory integrated DNS.
Works great.

I don't like a router/firewall/IDS/IPS/whatever do stuff that doesn't belong on such a machine.
For the average consumer that's fine, but other then that not.
