HAProxy + Websockets (or how do I customize the haproxy config)

Hi, I have a number of sites that use SignalR that are having trouble with timeouts on websockets.  I've read all over the place and it isn't clear how to get websockets to work with HAProxy and even if you can, all of the solutions appear to require editing the root config in /usr/local/etc.

I'm reluctant to do that because apparently changes there don't get saved in backups.

How can I go about ensuring that websockets get upgraded automatically by haproxy AND that the tunnel timeout is set to an hour or more?

(and how do I get all of this to stay in the backup of the config settings?)
