Disable force gateway setting

There this setting under Firewall -> Advanced -> Disable force gateway that's off by default, i.e. firewall rules are created that superseed the routing table. I recently wasted a lot of time because of this setting, trying to understand why I had what looked like a routing problem. Can anyone please explain what this automatic policy routing is good for?
