Basic setup question

I feel this is a very basic setup question but I am also new to networking stuff so I am asking anyways. I have my OpnSense machine plugged into my Motorola MB8600 modem (which by default just functions as a bridge) into a two port gigabit NIC (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09D3JL14S/), with another cord plugged into a switch with my devices. I can access the web GUI for OpnSense, but I cant access the internet from my current setup. What am I missing? The WAN DHCP address is coming up 0.0.0.0. Only thing ive noticed is the IP for the modem is 192.168.100.1, and the default of OpnSense is 192.168.1.1, not sure if thatd affect anything.

If you're in the middle of it as it seems to be the case then don't, for multiple reasons.


Modem to OPNsense to Switch(es) to devices and Access Points -- is the way to go.

When you've accomplished the above continue your troubleshooting by accessing https://1.1.1.1 and then https://www.cisco.com. If still down post the output for this command in a terminal

I am not quite sure what you are saying, I have the modem plugged into the machine running OpnSense, so that should be correct. I am also able to access the web gui from a machine plugged into the switch that the OpnSense machinr is connected to. Am I misinterpreting what youre saying?

Ah, it seemed you had the opnsense to the machine with two nics and from there to the switch.

If that's not the case then I need to know about 1.1.1.1 and nslookup as written above

The OpnSense machine doesnt have nslookup when I try to use the CLI (by pressing 8 ), and when i trying to ping any site from my laptop connected to the switch i get name resolution failures. Also both ethernet cords (modem -> OpnSense and OpnSense -> switch) are plugged into the PCIE NIC if that helps. Not sure if the name resolution failures mean somethings off with DNS, but I cant figure out how to modify that.

Figured it out, just needed to configure DNS properly
