Loopback blast on dns port in firewall

I am getting a blast of 20+ entries to/from localhost port 53 every ~20 seconds.  Every time my CPU jumps from 0-3% up to 30%.  It doesn't correlate to the number of requests made by other clients.  Is this normal?
