Nitpick : opnsense version number usually off by one month...

Hi,
Last time I posted something that I was displeased with the othersense fanatic picked it up and made a mess out of it so I am going to try to thread very carefully here....
From what I can remember many of the recent releases have been done just a couple of days before the end of the month. Assuming that 21.1 will be released by the end of this month , would it not make more sense to call it 21.2 to better reflect when it was released? I feel this would be more consistent with both the releases and peoples expectations.
Yes, I appreciate that opnsense is free, and this is a minor issue so I almost don't feel right complaining about this at at all , but on the other hand I have chosen to donate (and I encourage others to as well) so perhaps I have bought myself the "right" to be a tad unpleasant.
PS! Keep up the good work , opnsense is really a pleasure to use and it is getting better and better for every release it seems

Hi there,
Historically it was a hint at Ubuntu version numbers, but in any case the reference is probably lost on half the user base by now.
I don't think numbering will change in 2021 (21.1 and 21.7 that is) but beyond that it's entirely unsure how it could look like. It would probably be nicer to move away from indicating release months, but the year number continues to be a useful metric (i.e. how many years ago was the last update of this box?).
As the business edition is going to change this year that one will receive a new versioning scheme as well so experience with this can probably help improve the community versioning scheme.
Cheers,
Franco

Thanks for your answer.
I must admit that I tend to prefer traditional versioning (e.g. version.revision.patch), but I absolutely agree that year.month makes sense for projects such as opnsense.
I hope you can consider replacing month with simply "major release". e.g. 21.1 is the first major release and 21.2 is the second (july/august) release of the year. Even something as simple as that would be an improvement in my humble opinion as it gives some more flexibility regarding release date. That being said - this is purely nitpick and quite honestly it does not matter that much. It is just (for me) a minor annoyance.
Anyway looking forward to the 21.1 release
