General Discussion / Re: Ignoring redirect-gateway

Thanks for the help.

My hardware failed, and I'm going to rebuild it.
I have to put this on the back burner until I get going again.

My goal is to route all upstream traffic over the VPN automatically.
I am rebuilding the box opnsense is running on, so I will attempt to reconstruct it.
Thank you for the response viragomann.

General Discussion / Ignoring redirect-gateway
January 13, 2026, 02:46:50 PM
I am using OpenVPN with IPVanish.
The VPN is connected.

I am getting this error in the VPN logfile:
Options error: option 'redirect-gateway' cannot be used in this context ([PUSH-OPTIONS])

I found this entry in the OPNSense Wiki:
Ignoring redirect-gateway
If you are running OpenVPN as a client, and the server you use is using push "redirect-gateway" then your client redirects all internet traffic over the VPN. Sometimes clients do not want this, but they can not change the server's configuration. This page explains how to override redirect-gateway so the client does not need to redirect internet even though the server says to.

Method 1: filter the pushed option
Add the following option to the client

--pull-filter ignore redirect-gateway
This requires version 2.4 or higher and is the preferred method. For older versions use one of the methods described below.

My first question is: Will this be a solution to my error?
My second question is where (what file, what screen, etc) do I put that line?
IPVanish provides a .opvn file that I reference in the OpenVPN setup.
I have edited that file with auth-nocache to try and remove another error, but it didn't make any difference.

Thanks.

Solved.
It was my fault.
In my network adapter settings I had 1.1.1.1 in the DNS field.
So, I think I created some kind of lookup issue since OPNSense is doing all of that for the network.

Thanks pfry for the post.

I am having issues with web access.
I reset opnsense to default.
Set WAN interface to DHCP
Set LAN interface to Static

I can ping other computers/devices on the network.

I can open the following websites:
https://crosswordclub.com/
https://speed.cloudflare.com/
https://app.netbird.io/
https://www.google.com/maps

I cannot open the following websites.  The message is "ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE"

https://pcpartpicker.com/
https://www.speedtest.net
https://www.chase.com
https://www.paypal.com

I had previously configured netbird for my main pc and my server, and opnsense.
I'm not sure if that is the problem because, as I stated, I reset OPNSense back to default, and the netbird connections for the 2 computers are no longer showing in the Netbird > Connecton Status page of OPNSense.

I am very new to OPNSense, and this has me lost.
Why would I have connectivity to some websites?

Thanks.

General Discussion / Partition or not?
January 02, 2026, 05:32:14 PM
I have just purchased a miniPC with 512gb SSD and installed OPNSense on it.

I see that OPNSense is only using 1gb of the disk.

The box is capable of a lot more, and I'm wondering if I should try to create another disk partition to install other software or just install to the main disk.

Maybe docker containers or something along those lines.

What would be the safest approach?
Thanks.
