Hi all,
I've been messing about with OPNsense and eSIMs lately, trying to make travelling a bit less of a faff. The idea isn't just to throw on a VPN or filter traffic, but to have a couple of reliable mobile connections when abroad, and sometimes you can grab a cheeky discount on the eSIMs too, there are even places that list useful esim discount codes if you need them. What I've found is it's pretty handy if you want to play with your network setup, for example, you can configure OPNsense to switch between eSIM connections if one drops out, or even dedicate a SIM to certain devices. It takes a bit of fiddling with routing rules and failover, but once it's up, it's smooth. Just watch out for the eSIM limits and hardware compatibility. Some providers restrict the duration or the countries you can use, and your modem needs to support eSIM properly. Once it's all set though, it's a lifesaver for testing mobile connections without faffing about with physical SIMs.
Has anyone else tried juggling multiple mobile connections with OPNsense? How do you handle the routing and failover? I've only done some basic tests so far, curious to see if anyone's gone full-on advanced with it.
