24.1, 24.4 Legacy Series / Serial wont install
May 04, 2024, 06:33:19 PM
Hello, I was wondering if anyone else has had issues installing via the serial image in UEFI mode?

OPNsense-24.1-serial-amd64.img

DEC740

The console died loading ax0 and ax1. It stops responding. Though it does not disconnect my session.

Perfecct, I figured as much. I just didn't know the printout was a place holder. Thanks Franco!

Updated the previous post. All part numbers and modules were tested personally. You can also look for ones with similar part/model numbers as long as they meet the specified requirements posted previously.

The default BIOS setting for timings and ram clocks is <Auto> so it is simply reading the JDEC rating of the ram installed.

hah thats a good Idea! I put a 256gb in it that I had around but I know there are a few sales on 1tb at the moment!

I would argue that it can easily be replaced. For reference, I have a DEC750 with 8 GByte and according to 'dmidecode', this is:

Handle 0x000C, DMI type 17, 40 bytes
Memory Device
        Array Handle: 0x000B
        Error Information Handle: 0x000E
        Total Width: 64 bits
        Data Width: 64 bits
        Size: 8 GB
        Form Factor: DIMM
        Set: None
        Locator: DIMM 0
        Bank Locator: P0 CHANNEL A
        Type: DDR4
        Type Detail: Synchronous Unbuffered (Unregistered)
        Speed: 2667 MT/s
        Manufacturer: Unknown
        Serial Number: XXXXXXXXX
        Asset Tag: Not Specified
        Part Number: TS1GLH64V6BL
        Rank: 1
        Configured Memory Speed: 2400 MT/s
        Minimum Voltage: 1.2 V
        Maximum Voltage: 1.2 V
        Configured Voltage: 1.2 V

So it is only one slot of DDR4 unbuffered UDIMM which must support at least 2400 MT/s. The Transcend part in my box has CL19 and single rank. It can be, but does not have to be ECC, but it needs to be UDIMM, not RDIMM: https://www.reddit.com/r/OPNsenseFirewall/comments/qxo7eh/anyone_has_info_on_the_a10gen3_board_and_the/

The netboard A10 can support up to 32 GByte: https://www.deciso.com/netboard-a10-gen3/, but to fit into the case, I think you need VLP form factor, such as MTA18ADF4G72AZ-2G6.

You will obviously lose the warranty when you open the device, there is a seal you would have to break.

^^ This. As long as the ram is a VLP (1.2v) DDR4 UDIMM and is JDEC between 2400/2666 it should work.

At current I have the following 16GB Micron stick (Crucial)

Micron PN: MTA18ADF2G72AZ-2G6E1ZI
Crucial PN: CT16G4XFD8266.18FE1

It works fine in my DEC740.

The following 32gb Micron stick also works.

Micron PN: MTA18ADF4G72AZ-2G6B2

23.1 Legacy Series / Biz license and mirror issue
February 26, 2023, 10:18:30 PM
I did some digging and came to the conclusion the following issue may be DNS related.

However; after changing the upstream DNS server: System > Settings > General and several restarts of the router later my DEC740 doesnt appear to be able to contact the mirror.

I assumed this was because the business version may be running "behind" for stability as I am on 23.1.1 community after a fresh install. Looking at the print out though it shows a searched version higher than what I am on.

Is this me or the mirror? Is there anything I can do? It seems that rather than DNS it cant fetch some manifest file.

Hardware and Performance / Re: DEC740 BIOS upgrades
February 25, 2023, 02:10:36 AM
For those curious my device came in and I opened it.

Examining manually the bios available at: https://docs.opnsense.org/hardware/bios.html

Is version: 05.32.50.0014-A10.22

BIOS Version : 05.32.50.0014-A10.22
BIOS Build Date : 02/18/2022
Processor Type : AMD Ryzen Embedded V1500B
System Memory Speed : 2400 MHz

However on my particular DEC740

the BIOS version is: 05.32.50.0014-A10.24

BIOS Version : 05.32.50.0014-A10.24
BIOS Build Date : 12/14/2022
Processor Type : AMD Ryzen Embedded V1500B
System Memory Speed : 2400 MHz

I found this by connecting my eeprom reader. The chip is a MXIC MX25U6432F: https://www.mxic.com.tw/en-us/flash-memory-solutions/extended-temperature/Pages/spec.aspx?p=MX25U6432F&m=Ext+Temperature&n=PM2850

In something like AS/NeoProgrammer or your flavor of flash software the following 1.8v chip profiles worked.

- MX25U6473F
- MX25U6435F

I flashed the original BIOS back as it was newer.

Hardware and Performance / DEC740 BIOS upgrades
February 21, 2023, 06:40:18 AM
Hello! long time no see.

I ran my own SFF pc with opnsense for a long time, some VMs still. I donated from time to time, but with the fans failing in my SFF I decided to purchase a DEC740 to further support the project.

I am picky about making sure I am upto date though. Are there updates or resources to download and flash the hardware's BIOS?

Thanks for reporting, maybe you're so kind to open a bug report on github for this?

Sure can.

Hiya,

When I attempt to install 20.7 into a gen2 VM even with secure boot disabled I cannot get passed the guided/advanced install menu. My keyboard simply will not function. I cannot drop to shell or otherwise interact with it via console. The live environment including GUI however works the entire time (though with perceived increase in CPU usage judging by the GUI).

However I do not run into this issue in a gen1 VM.

Further if I create a gen2 VM after installation and attach the VHD created it will boot without issue.

Just figured id let anyone know.

I was looking into helping some buffer issues I am having and came across this thread from 2016 https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=2279.0 I was wondering if this was fully implemented? It seemed to drop off as a beta add on pending FreeBSD 11.1 baked it in fully.

Development and Code Review / Re: UniFi Controller

I think I remember reading about this on reddit, really pumped about this!

ah nvm this is for running the controller on the router, I was reading about integration with the gateway protocols used in the controller itself.
