25.7, 25.10 Series / Could This Be The Reason?
December 08, 2025, 02:06:28 PM
I've been trying to set up Opnsense transparent bridge for almost a month now (spent over 60 hours).  I've been following The Network Guy.  I do exactly what he does on the video.  When I get to the part where we're almost ready to put the bridge up and going to hit Change (something), I lose everything.  Even my maintenance can't get back in.  Therefore, I have to start all over again.  Last night I was messing with my router (RT-BE86U) and came to realize that it has AiProtection on it, including Two-Way IPS, Malicious Sites Blocking, Infected Device Prevention, and Blocking.  Would this prevent me from running the Bridge completely?  If so, is there a workaround?
Thanks

I found out what the problem was.  My VPN kept getting in the way.  Since I turned that off, there are no issues.  When I post something in this forum, I found that I don't get an email telling me that someone answered my question.  This post is closed.

Ok, Ok, so the question keeps coming up, why do I want the transparent bridge?  For a newbie (like myself), it's learning new things.  Secondly, I love my router too much to have it sit in the hallway somewhere. But I'm hoping that once everything is settled, and I'm happy, the wife is glad, and my router breaks down, then yes, my mini pc will take over as the main router.  Besides that, I also have 33 CCTV cameras that I would have to move, and more.  So, a little bit at a time, okay, guys?  But you still haven't answered my question, where would I or what ip address would I use for the maintenance bridge?
Thanks.

This is along the same problem.  I've been following the video from "Home Network Guy - How To Set Up A transparent Filtering Bridge on OPNsense" because I'm very slowly learning about networking.  I mean, to me it's step by step (which is what I need).  Two problems.  #1:  One day, I can get it to work (the section I'm learning about), and the next day, I go back and make a correction or something, and it doesn't work.  Come back a week later and it does work.  Doesn't make sense to me.  And yes, he does talk about making the maintenance interface.  He the reason for my question is because of what he is saying, I have no clue about.  In his video he states "You will need to ensure the static IP address is not located in the DHCP range you have set on your primary router and does not conflict with any other static IP addresses on your management network."  So again, with the opening question and this, what should my ip address be for the MGMT interface?

I'm sure a lot of people who are new to OpnSense would like to know this as well.  For example, and again I say "for example", my home network is on 192.168.75.0/24, and my OpnSense is on 192.168.2.0/24.  So where would the maintenance interface go (which ip address)?

25.7, 25.10 Series / Dum as they come
October 20, 2025, 04:50:20 AM
I'm not dum, just don't know that much as far as networking.  I'm learning tho, but right now the wife is getting pissed at me because I'm been working (about 6 hours a day) trying to get opnsense (Transpart bridge) to work for me.  Even my MGMT don't work for me once I hit apply and I lose the dashboard.  So I'm sure everything will understand this.
ATT (In passthorugh mode (192.168.1.X) ----> Mini PC (Have no clue aboout the subnet here) ----- Going to my ASUS router (router mode (192.168.75.X).  So what can I do to get my mgmt to work right.  I'm following the homenetwork guy onn How To Set Up A Transparent Filtering Bridge on OPNsense.

I can't believe that our of 70 view to a basic question, no one can offer any type of advise.

Hello, I got my first mini PC in hand.  Got my ATT in ip passthrough to my mini pc.  From there I got it talking to my home router.  So far so good, but just hold on a minute I'm not done yet.  I following 2 not 3 but 2 ways of setting up the Transparent Bridge.  The first one is from opnsense docs and the second is from dave on Transparnet bridge.  Yes, I completely understand that I need to have a working knowledge in networking but not required.  So I have a little to be bad.  My first question is when you install opnsense and see the igc 0 and 1, they show me what is igc 0 and igc 1.  On igc0 (WAN) it's my public IP address and on igc 1 (LAN) it shows me the ip address to opnsense dashboard.  When I see the dashboard tho, it shows 2 spots that state WAN () AND WAN (ACTIVE) which has a strange ip address. What is this strange IP address?  SIDE NOTE:  I want opnsense security part and not the router part, as I love my home router to much.
Thank you
P.S.  There are more questions, but I'm taking step by step on this as I've tried to get this working about 10 times of which 1 time I got it update itself and then locked up on me, and the other 9 times, nothing.

I think you misunderstood me when I was talking about a NAS.  The files the opnsense makes/has I would like to send those to my NAS.

I hear and obey your command.  Next question.  I will only have 2TB of storage on my mini pc.  If I stick with just the basic opnsense(clam AV) what other one (plug in) would you add?  The reason why I bring up the storage is because I would like to have the mini pc become part of my lan in the sense that I can write files back and fourth from my windows pc to my mini pc and back again, as my NAS has 3TB.  Is this possible?  If so, how do I do this part now.

@Patrick M. Hausen - I thank you for your info and plan to follow the doc's that you gave me.  However, look at step #6.  The title is "Disable the DHCP server on LAN".  So what do I do here?  Click the box Enable DHCP server on LAN interface or not?  Here is what my router currently looks like.  My Mini PC is coming today :)

I'm a newbie by the word.  I'm sorry I don't understand what Layer2 Firewall means.  This is what I would like to happen as I didn't pay $400 for a ASUS router (BE-86u).  I have a ATT gateway that brings in the 1GP fiber into my house which is currently setup in IP Passthrough to my ASUS router.  Today, I get my mini PC and want to solely put opnsense on it for the firewall only.  No router functions, just firewall, as my ASUS router will do all the DHCP.  So (as they say on TV) "how do you do that?
Thanks

You know I posted this question back in May, I started to watch another video of this, and I'm now ready.  Things have changed, and therefore, I need to know this.  Okay so I have a cable coming in from the street connected to my AT&T router.  Then it's connected to my router and my router hands out all the stuff it's suppose to do.  So do I put a cable from my AT&T router to my PC that is running open sense and then to my router or just forget the router?
Thanks

Okay, I'm completely lost when it comes to this stuff.  So please bear with me as I ask my questions.  My setup is as follows:  1GB fiber coming into my ATT Gateway (320-500).  From the ATT Gateway, I have it in IP Passthrough mode to my ASUS RT-88U Pro.  Now here's comes the fun part.  I would like to use my raspberry PI4 for OPNsense.  So how would I wire this up?  Can it even be done?  What is the best way of doing this?
Thanks
