Well it crashed again overnight so I guess downgrading didn't resolve it. Argh.
I'm not sure how to remove the Realtek interface, it's physically connected to the motherboard and there doesn't appear to be any settings in the bios to disable it from there. Other than removing the Realtek driver from the kernel and recompiling it, I'm not sure what my options are.
