Final reply to myself, as this may help others.
- It was nothing to do with the Virgin Media modem.
- I had turned on Wireguard VPN, and had not ticked "Disable routes" in the Wireguard VPN instance. Therefore it was creating its own routes.
Ticking this immediately brought my internet connection back up.
