Please Point me to a cheaper mini that will be 100% compatible with OPSense 2.7 and still do the job

Yes it was me. However, the PC supports Linux and can be bought with Linux or Win 11.

Dual Nic Mini PC,Intel N100 16GB RAM 512GB SSD Mini Computer
Dual 2.5 Gigabit Gigabit Ethernet LAN which may be my problem.

LIGHTNING-FAST NETWORK: Benefit from Dual 2.5Gbps LAN ports(Realtek RTL8125b) for versatile applications, while WiFi6(802.11ax) ensures lightning-fast internet.

Maybe it is too modern.

General Discussion / No network interfaces are assigned
November 02, 2024, 08:30:43 PM
I just installed OPNsense 24.7. I installed it with just the working LAN port plugged in. However, after re-boot I see "No network interfaces are assigned" ( see picture).

So I thought maybe I need to plug a working WAN and LAN in to make them auto assign. So I plugged them in and rebooted. It ended up at the same screen. How do I get OPNsense to auto see the WAN and LAN ports so I have the DHCP IP address to log into with a browser and complete my setup !  Thanks!

As it stands, I bet there are no usable ethernet NICs, see this, points 5 and 6.

There are two Gigabit NICS on this new mini pc. Which is why I bought it

That is because I didn't plug in the network. I thought I was getting it installed and setup before putting it on the network. I plan on putting it between the optical modem and my existing router. So should I plug both NICS in now where it will be going or can I plug one in and set it up first.

Also should I be using Serial or VGA image? Thanks!

General Discussion / Where is the log in prompt!
October 30, 2024, 09:44:42 PM
I am trying to install OPNSense on a brand new I3 CPU 16GB RAM mini PC. The SSD is new and clean. I downloaded OPNsense-24.7-amd64. I boots off a USB flash drive and gets to the part where It asks me to log in as root or installer but there is no login prompt. <See picture> I have tried this with VGA and Serial images and the same thing happens.

I have been following directions of Dave's Garage which shows a login prompt appearing of which I am suppose to log in with Installer   pass opnsense  which is suppose to start the installation. But I never have a log in prompt. Anybody know why?  Thanks!

General Discussion / Will this hardware do the job?
October 30, 2024, 01:35:57 AM
I want to create a OPNsense router. This is for my single user home network. I have optical 1GB internet. I have a gigabit router and switches and a Unifi wifi nest.

I am planning on using one of two mini computers I have for the OPNese install. I was previously using them with TVs to browse and stream. They original came with Windows 8 but long ago I upgraded to windows 10. They can handle W10 browsing and streaming this just fine.
Hardware identical except for one has 2GB of DDR3 RAM and the other 4GB. SSD is 60GB. They both use an

Intel Celeron N2808
CPU Specifications
•   Total Cores 2
•   Total Threads 2
•   Burst Frequency2.25 GHz
•   Processor Base Frequency1.58 GHz
•   Cache1 MB L2 Cache
•   Scenario Design Power (SDP)3 W
•   TDP4.5 W

It is all old hardware but it has always been reliable for what I used it for.

Question:
Will either one of them run ok in my setup with OPNSense as a Transparent Filtering bridge?
Any and all help appreciated! Thanks
