Thanks for the link, but it deals with restarting dpinger when it fails. What I need is a way to evaluate dpinger's result, specifically an alert when a gateway goes down.

I've been chasing my tail for a few days trying to put this together, but not finding what I need--a basic how-to for monitoring gateways in OPNsense.

I have two gateways with two different providers configured for failover. Failover works surprisingly well, much better than most commercial (enterprise-grade) firewalls I've used, but the one thing I'm still missing is email/SMS notification when one of my providers goes down. I've been studying and researching Monit and looking for an obvious way to pick up the gateway status, but everything I've found comes just short of the answer.

Can someone give me a basic rundown of how to make this work?

General Discussion / Load Balancing with big speed differences

I'm working on a new installation of OPNsense where I have two WANs. The main WAN is gigabit+ cable, the secondary is VDSL at 25-30Mbps down. In my previous installation, I had these two set up with simple failover/failback (the only option on that router; I was told that the two sources at such different speeds wouldn't work).

The docs for OPNsource suggest that different speeds can be used in load balancing, but would two sources so far apart in speed be practical? I'd love to be able to use the bandwidth on the backup source. In the old install it mostly just sat there waiting for the cable modem to go down.

Is this worth trying?

 In my case, I need three ports for WAN—two for my primary provider (using LACP) and one for my backup. The 4th port is the LAN.

I’d prefer using single or double port cards, but the machine only has two PCIe card slots.

Hardware and Performance / Intel NICs

I plan to roll out a new OPNsense install on a surplus computer. I'll need one or more 4-port NICs (the machine only has 2 expansion card slots). The Intel I350T4V2 card has been highly recommended, but after seeing the price, I'm considering alternatives (Intel ONLY).

The PRO/1000 4-port card is a lot more wallet-friendly. Is there a substantial difference in performance between the two? I'm on a tight budget, but I don't want to buy the wrong thing and regret it.

Can anyone give me an unbiased comparison between the I350T4V2 and the 4-port PRO/1000?
