General Discussion / WAN Uptime Not System Uptime
July 23, 2023, 08:21:39 AM
Is there a way to make OPNSense keep track of WAN uptime.  It's different than system uptime.  I just want to know if/and when my internet goes down.  I also use PPPoE for WAN (DSL modem with transparent bridging).

He might not know how to install OPNSense Plugins.  Install it under "System: Firmware: Plugins: os-upnp", then go to "Services: Universal Plug and Play: Settings" to enable it.

Hartmut went into detail on how to get an Atheros wireless adapter working in hostap mode: https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=20956.0

My question is why hasn't this been implemented in the Web GUI?  Wireless interfaces also seem to be missing some configuration options, such as HT mode (only ht40 is enabled in the web GUI).  This is fixable in the command line, but it would be nice to have more web GUI options for wireless cards.

Hi OPNSense community,
I currently run DNS server on my Synology nas and 2 raspberry pi to run adguard home for adblocking, can you confirm that I can keep that setup, what DNS upstream server should be set on Opnsense, should I point to my Synology DNS or to an external DNS provider like Cloudflare?

I run Adguard on my OPNSense PC.  Adguard isn't in the official repos, but it's in the mimugmail repo (Google it).  It's really easy to add that repo and use Adguard IMO.  I have a CenturyLink DSL modem in transparent bridging mode, and I use PPPoE in OPNSense. I'm really happy using OPNSense over a DD-WRT/Tomato based router.  It's a lot faster, and can do a lot more!

EDIT: I thought you needed help with a wireless device.

I also use CenturyLink PPPoE over DSL transparent bridge.  I have 40 Mbps/3 Mbps DSL.  I can't get fiber where I'm at.

The kernel logs would be worth checking, but given that it runs for a while it is unlikely to be the boot process.

Vintage AMD has a problem with thermals. Can you run a stress test with s-tui and keep an eye on the temperature? https://pypi.org/project/s-tui/

I never did figure out what the cause of the reboots were.  I would hear the BIOS beep and not the OPNSense reboot beeps.  I switched back to a dual core Intel CPU and it's really stable.

There is "automatic outbound NAT rule generation" under Firewall -> NAT -> Outbound in the WebGUI, also check your Firewall Rules for your LAN.  What is your NIC setup?  I have 2 NICs, one for LAN and WAN traffic.

You may have a hardware issue. To start the process of elimination, boot from a memtest86 USB stick and test your RAM: https://www.memtest86.com/download.htm

Bart...

I've been testing my RAM for the past 8 hours with 0 errors.  If it's not the RAM causing random reboots, is it something else?  Are there any logs which would indicate a hardware/software problem?

It's an older AM3 motherboard with 4 GB (2x2 GB) DDR3 RAM.  I'll try that, thanks!

General Discussion / Random Reboots

I seem to have random reboots.  Sometimes I will have great uptime (1-2 days), but OPNSense will randomly reboot, especially when I'm using it.  I went to System -> Log Files -> General in the WebGUI, but it only shows logs after it rebooted.  What log files should I be looking at to find the problem (I've checked /var/log, but I can't see anything).

Thank you hartmut for this detailed information!  I also have to configure the ath0 interface via the command line to get it working in hostap mode.  This needs to be fixed in the WebGUI!
