not sure if I did the post right but hopefully this works.  my hardware setup is a HP microserver G8 16 gb ram, 2 500 gb sata drives mirrored. Drives are set in basic sata setup and the internal raid card is turned off. But I want to change these drives out for 500gb SSD drives and was generally wondering how to recover from  drive failure. I am a windows guy so command line is newer to me.  Greg

Ok I was looking around the web and came across an article for pfsense that someone wrote that basically says that using SSD in a firewall setup might not be a good idea. His basis is that the firewall (opnsense/pfsense) are writing data just about every second (depending on usage and size of network etc.) and that SSD drives are not a good choice for high amounts of writes because they will fail around 10,000. Any thoughts or opinions?  I wont post the link here since its actually on a pfsense forum (unless I am aloud to do this) but the article was interesting and it actually did make some sense.  It was writing 10 years ago but the basis still has its roots today.

Thanks I removed these and went with a xp500 based intel card which is working fine so far.

ok I installed opnsense with dual drive zfs mirror.  If I have a drive failure what is the correct process to replace/upgrade the drive?  I may want to swap out the disks for SSD's but also wanted to know how to handle a drive failure as well.   Also how can i tell if the mirror is in good shape and working correctly?
Thx Greg

ok fixed this. I had to go back to legacy mode drive setting in the bios. everything installed fine

Hi, I decided to switch my install to a HP micro server G8, running 16gb ram, dual 500gb drives booting from the sata control with the internal raid controller turned off. I get the error when i try to boot from the DVD drive. I have not installed to the hard disk yet (need to boot from the install cd first). Any idea what this error is telling me?

My opnsense is not recognizing my 2.5gb qbap nics that are based on the Intel Ethernet Controller I225-LM.  I thought BSD / opnsense supported this chipset? Its picking up the built in 1gb card that I am not using.  Can I download the driver maybe and install manually (will have to figure out how to do that aa well). any thoughts?

21.7 Legacy Series / new install hangs
October 17, 2021, 12:47:49 AM
Hi all, just to start I am a newbie and this is my very first install of this sw.  My hardware is a HP elite 8200 sff with 20gb of ram, 500 gb Samsung SSD, intel i7 cpu, with 2 qnap intel based 2.5gb nics (I will not be using the built in 1gb nic). I downloaded the DVD version and I can boot from the dvd with no issues. But when I ran the install to install to the hard drive  But when it boots from the hard disk it hangs. see attached picture.   Any thoughts and suggestions?
Thx, Greg
