General Discussion / Re: UDP Broadcast Relay
March 08, 2022, 01:07:06 PM
So I think I have a bit of strange problem.  I have setup UDPBR as per the guide for mDNS (specifically for Chromecast devices.  As most people seem to do, I have my IoT vlan and my main LAN.  Currently they're both wide open to each other as I test things.  While I was able to see and connect to the various chromecasts, the connections would randomly drop out.  This was especially apparent in the home app where you could see devices appear and disappear.

I then installed IGMP Proxy and configured the upstream as my LAN and my downstream as my IoT vlan.  If I have both services running, Chromecast connections are rock solid (and extremely fast to discover).  The weird thing though, is in my logs, I have warnings from IGMP proxy that various multicast addresses are in use, which I assume is due to UDPBR using them.

EDIT - Just tested mDNS Repeater and it works as expected without IGMP Proxy enabled.
EDIT 2 - Spoke to soon.  Without IGMP proxy installed, some devices don't load in the Google Home app even with using mDNS.

Any thoughts on this, or anyone else see this?

Thanks in advance!

I've also noticed that my previously working NTP redirect is now no longer working, though my DNS redirect is working perfectly fine.

Transfer from PiHole (running on a Pi) to AdGuard on OPNSense went flawlessly.  By using a virtual IP for AdGuard, I didn't even need to change any of my preconfigured rules, which was nice.  I had allocated myself a few hours to get this done, and it ended up taking less than 15 minutes :)

Question though.  One of the "optimizations" that is sometimes recommended when using PiHole in conjunction with Unbound is to disable DNS caching on the pi-hole, so that all DNS lookup is handled by Unbound.  Would this provide any benefit with AdGuard?

Thanks!

EDIT - So an oddity.  Using a virtual IP, it showed no port conflicts using Port 80 or Port 53, and everything worked great a day.  Today I decided to tweak some unbound settings and had to restart the service... and it wouldn't start due to a port conflict.  Any ideas?

/usr/local/AdGuardHome

ugh, thanks for that.  For some reason the first time I deleted that directory, it didn't seem to do anything.  I even went so far as to do a locate on AdGuard and delete all mention of it (to no avail).  That said, the second time I removed that directory, it worked fine.

Thanks again for your help!

Just a quick question regarding AdGuard.  I installed it, poked around with it, and now I want to start fresh.  However, upon reinstall, my settings still exist.  Where can I wipe these and/or reset to defaults?

Thanks!
