Hi first off let me say sorry if this has been asked a million times but i have a setup that has 0 connectivity and i dont know why i will start off by describing my current setup and what i need to enable asap

(wan) D-link DWR-921 4G modem ----- Opnsense configured pc with 2 nic:s (wan & lan) ------ samsung Speedstream 5450 adsl modem (to connect other network machines to network

dwr921 is oerating with a router ip of 192.168.0.1 with 255.255.255.0 subnet
Speedstream is operating on 172.16.0.254 with 255.255.0.0 netmask

previously i could not access the webui until i changed speedstream to 172.16.0.254 address range
however at any point  i couldnt ping for example 8.8.8.8 from the opnsense machine ?
am i wrong to assume that with the any rules the machine should have some connectivity after initial install ?

my LAN (re0) is setup with v4:172.16.0.200/24
my WAN (em0) is v4/DHCP4: 192.168.0.50/24

wanweb dhcp & dhcp6 status is listed as ONLINE

everything should be in its default state after configuration wizard, i need to resolve this so i can get my proxmox server live and installing necessary things etc. this connection i am using as a piggyback from the dwr-921 wifi i am however wired at the sametime to the speedstream which gives me Ui access to everything

im sorry if everything seems rather vague, my "extensive" firewall experience extends to the 2000's zonealarm configuring which isnt saying much  ;D

Hardware and Performance / HDD an absolute necessity ?

hello and thank you for taking your time to read my forum post!

i am currently in the process of building a firewall out of a HP proliant ML310 G4 tower

iwe been looking at benchmarks where theres been alot of mention about using SD cards for the Operating system instead of HDD's, i am at a budget where i dont get to use SSD's for a simple firewall

i am looking at a troughput of 20-150mb/s however im not sure if this is achievable with the hardware schematic i have planned

i am curious if it is possible to setup OPNsense to run from a usb stick so that if needed any logs made would be offloaded to a server in the actual network, i am asking if this is possible as i have a limited amount of harddrives and truly limited funds on hardware (hence the old machine in the first place)

this whole setup in its context is hypothetical as it will take me time until i get access to all the hardware where i will be setting this up, hence i have 0 first hand knowledge of OPNsense it simply has come highly recommended therefore i am curious if it is possible to run it trough usb without much hinderance and HDD's

and if usb is not a good enough alternative are there any cheap alternatives would an SD card trough a reader be better if so is there any documentation on this ?

Regards
